iFixit tears down Galaxy Fold, finds it fatally fragile
Despite Samsung's recalls, tear down specialists iFixit have managed to get their hands on the Galaxy Fold and open it up a lot more than it already does.
While it's best to read the tear down in its , here are some of the talking points raised by the article:
One of the areas for concern are the gaps all around the phone. While we already know the Galaxy Fold is not ingress protected, the gaps are rather large around the hinge and may potentially be a location for small particles to get stuck and jam the mechanism or even damage the display. The board has silicone seals around the flex cable connectors, presumably as a form of very minor ingress protection. The motherboard is also split in two. The right side board is the one that has all the important bits, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC, storage, and radio units. The inner display has a thin 2mm lip around it that can be peeled off. iFixit notes the bezel around the inner display is not wide enough to sufficiently protect the display. They also noted the lip may peel off on its own over time as it was easy to remove.The glued-on front bezel
The display, of course, has the infamous advanced polymer protective later on top, which can be peeled off. This results in certain and permanent damage to the inner display. The display has a connector placed on the side, meaning it's mounted sideways. This is the reason that there's a jelly effect when scrolling, an effect we have previously observed on the OnePlus 5 that had its OLED display mounted upside down. The hinge mechanism seems well-engineered and durable but contains a flex cable that connects the left half to the right. While the hinge itself may last up to 200,000 folds as Samsung claims, whether the cable survives that long remains to be seen.The hinge with the two flex cables
The phone got a 2/10 from iFixit, which also factors in how easy it was to open and repair the phone yourself apart from the durability. The phone itself was relatively easy to get into but the components are fragile and may be impossible to replace by the user.The experts over at iFixit also suggest there are a few potential reasons why the smartphone is failing in the hands of reviewers.
For starters, OLED panels are pretty fragile on its own. They are way more delicate than LCDs and just a small crack in the encapsulation can lead to unrepairable damage. The OLEDs themselves are very sensitive to oxygen and moisture so any damage to the outer layer is critical. So bending the screen itself is just inviting trouble unless there's some super strong material involved that keeps it together. Which leads us to the next concern.
The OLED panels are also like cleanrooms - sterile and free of any dust. This means that you don't want your everyday dust to accumulate and get under the pre-installed screen protector that's also not a screen protector, according to Samsung.
Over time, dust will build up and get under the protective polymer layer. Another way to get under the layer is the hinge. It doesn't look like it's airtight and Samsung didn't provide some kind of IP rating so when the general user opens and closes the phone in different environments - usually not sterile - dust could easily get through the hinge openings.
Samsung may have tested the hinge design and the durability of the panel in the long run with robots but keep in mind that these robots operate in a clean room and apply exactly the same pressure on both sides every single time when opening and closing. Humans, on the other hand, will use the phone outdoors and will open and close the phone in different and creative ways.
